East Midlands, 15 July 2018

On my way back home after a weekend in the Midlands, I stopped briefly at East Midlands. Trade Air Fokker 100 9A-BTD more than justified the stop:

It is always worth a quick check of Flight Radar before leaving an airport. Doing so showed that a Fed Ex 757 was inbound, so I delayed my departure to catch N974FD arrive: 

The stop was more than worthwhile, with the several West Atlantic aircraft also of note.

Oxford 13 July 2018

My last visit of the day was a stop at Oxford. 

Having been up since 4am I was getting rather tired as dusk started to set in. SE-RIZ was the only aircraft 'graphable from the fenceline, and I didn't stay long, knowing I still had a 90 minute or so drive ahead of me. However, I had enjoyed a superb day!

RAF Brize Norton 13 July 2018

Following my visit to RIAT, I travelled up to the Midlands, and made a short stop at RAF Brize Norton.

While I enjoyed an easy departure from the Fairford car parks - leaving early helped - it took me some time to escape the traffic management system that was taking me from the 'Blue' car parks back to the M4 and head north. However, the countryside in this part of the world makes for a very pleasant drive, and it took me around an hour to arrive at Brize.

The base was busy with a Hercules arriving shortly after me. The two Canadian paradroppers were welcome, and another interesting civil visitor was the Gulfstream from Bahrain. Brize Norton joins Farnborough, Manchester and Palma as airfields where I have seen this frame.

The military traffic was what you would expect here. This Atlas was the only aircraft within range of the camera - taking the shot attracted considerable interest from the on base security.

RAF Fairford, 13 July, 2018

And so to Fairford for the annual aviation extravaganza that is the Royal International Air Tattoo.

A days holiday was booked from work, as I visited on the Friday. I hoped for smaller crowds, but an early start was still required to ensure I didn't get caught in early morning traffic on the M25. However, I need not have worried, arriving before the gates opened, and getting some breakfast in the car park and then near enough walking straight onto the base.

The highlight for me was the Japan Air Self Defence Force's Kawasaki C-2 68-1203

Another next generation 'lifter was the Embraer KC-390 PT-ZNJ, but my attention was also caught by a much older aircraft, the Austrian Air Force's Hercules 8T-CA.

Although this was the first time I had seen an Austrian Herc, the aircraft was an old friend, having been seen by me at Fairford back in 1998 as XV181 when it served with the RAF.

I have long been a fan of the Panavia Tornado. Some of my earliest aviation memories were watching Tornados from the TTTE at RAF Cottesmore flying down the valley from my childhood home. The show provided my last opportunity to see an RAF GR4 as the type leaves the RAF shortly after the show after many years' distinguished service: 

Of all the foreign air arms represented at the show, the Canadians deserve special mention. Two Hornets joined a Hercules and a Griffon helicopter that hitched a lift across the Atlantic on a C-17 Globemaster. The Hercules brightened up its grey livery with a Canadian flag:
